Today’s news that Spanish defender, Sergio Ramos has backtracked on a desire to leave the Bernabeu only 24 hours since stating his desire to leave Madrid for China should come to no one as a shock.
Only yesterday, Ramos declared he wanted to leave Los Blancos for free to join an unknown club in the Chinese super league and personally visited the club president, Florentino Perez to ask for the move.
Roll on 24 hours later and miracles do happen! The 33 year old defender has now reiterated his desire to see out his playing days with the 13 time European Champions.Embed from Getty Images
Ramos will have you believe his recent behaviour has nothing to do with money and his huge demands.
Ramos said “It is true that I have an offer on the table from China, I will not lie about it.”
“My dream is to retire here. At no point did I consider going to China.”
“Yesterday, I went to see the president to make everything clear. I told the president that I would never go to a team that could compete with Madrid.”
“I am the captain of Real Madrid and I feel very loved and supported by my team mates.”
“I am not looking to renew my contract. I am happy with what I have. People always think its a strategy to earn more, but its the opposite.”
Pardon us all for being cynical Sergio, but I think we have seen all this behaviour before. Rewind to a couple of years ago when Ramos and his agent touted a move to Old Trafford to rejoin Jose Mourinho. The saga went on all summer with Ed Woodward convinced he was going to sign a galactico for United only for Ramos to re-negotiate the terms of his contract that made him captain of Madrid. Many believe this was his motive all along to satisfy his huge ego and become captain of Real.
It is surprising that this time it only took Ramos 24 hours to declare his undying love for Madrid. We all wonder what he negotiated this time with the president or was it just more headlines for the greedy defender?
